A Wizard to Begin With-Chapter One: Paige's Discovery

Eleven happy years had passed without Paige even knowing she was adopted.

But one day, she had asked her mom where her ancestors were from, for a school report, and her mother finally decided to tell her about her being adopted, for, her mother didn't know who Paige's real ancestors were. Paige was a little emotional, but she asked her mom where the orphanage was and rode her bike there, because it wasn't too far.

When she got there, there was lady in pink high-heels who greeted her. "Um.. I need to know who brought me here. If there is someone." Paige said with a sad look in her eyes.

"What's your name, sweetie? I'm Chelsea Hook." Chelsea asked.

"Paige Morne. I was adopted when I was a baby."

"Hm.... here we are! Here you go! Have a wonderful day!" sang Chelsea.

Paige walked out of the building. She looked at the card. It said: Rosie Clemets. 2918 Anthem Avenue.

Paige turned around. She was on Freedom Street, which was about two or three blocks away from Anthem Avenue. She rode her bike to the address.

When she got there, she climbed off her bike and started walking to the door. She was about to run away from the house, but she kept walking to the door. She knocked once.... twice..... three times until she gave up hope. But when she started walking away, an old lady opened the door.

"May I help you?" said the old lady.

Paige turned around and walked back. "I'm looking for a Rosie Clemets?" Paige stuttered.

"I'm Rosie." said the woman with a twinkle in her eye.

"Um, did you take me to the orphanage on Freedom Street? My name is Paige Morne."

Rosie motioned for her to come inside. Paige decided it would be safe to go inside.

"Would you like a cookie?" Rosie held a plate covered with cookies of all shapes and kinds.

"Thanks." Paige said shyly. She took a medium-sized peanut butter cookie.

"So, do you know who brought me here?" Paige asked. Rosie paused for a moment.

"To tell you the truth, I don't know. Why don't I tell you the whole story."

Paige nodded her head eagerly. "Yes please. Do you have any milk for these cookies?"

Rosie got some milk and then started telling the story. "It was a dark night. This night was Halloween, but everyone was at home. I was making my last batch of cookies for the day, and I felt a cold draft hit my neck. I was checking the windows, and while in this room, the front room, I saw something. No windows were open, but a dark figure sneaked toward my house. It had a cardboard box, with you in it. Then it went away. I decided to take you to the orphanage where you were adopted, I suppose. Oh, I remember, there was a note," Rosie sipped some milk. "you may want to see."

Paige thought for a moment. "Can I see it?" she asked.

"Of course!" Rosie walked into another room. Paige wondered what the note said. Suddenly, Rosie came back, holding a pile of crunched papers.

"Here you go. If you want, you can keep it." said Rosie. Paige opened the note. It said in messy handwriting:

You have been chosen to take care of and teach this young sorcerer. She must have her own dragon, spell books, and, of course, a wand. You must teach her before destruction strikes, or else no one will be saved. Thank you. --Z

Paige's eyes were starting to puff up because she was holding in her tears. Today had been so emotional and now excitement and terror raced through her mind. It was pretty cool to be a wizard, have your own dragon, wand, spell books, but, she was afraid. She had a bad headache. She checked her watch, 6:39. She was late.

"I have to go. I'll come back soon." Paige walked to the door, eating one more cookie.

"Thanks for coming. See you soon." Rosie called. Paige raced home. She decided to not tell her parents about herself. She wouldn't tell anyone. It was her and Rosie's little secret.

"Why are you so late for dinner?!" Paige's mother said to Paige when she got home. She tried to convince her mom she went to a friend's house, which wasn't a total lie. Rosie was her friend now.

Even though she was hungry, Paige stumbled up the stairs without getting a bite to eat. Paige changed into some clean (mismatched) pajama's and fell asleep. She hoped she could sleep in just this once. She dreamed about her parents and how kind and happy they were. But why would they give her up? That thought stayed in her mind until she woke up the next morning.

Paige woke up deliciously from a nice sleep. She could hear the blender, which meant they were having smoothies. She could also smell blueberry pancakes. She wanted to make sure she had slept in, so she checked her clock. 9:21. She had slept in, which felt good. Maybe today she would just stay in her pajama's and watch cartoons and then paint some pictures, and then do some chores to get some money. But her mind kept wandering off about all the magical stuff. It was too hard to think about right now. She went downstairs and had some breakfast and then did all the things on her list. She was having a good day, until somebody knocked on the door.

When she opened the door, she knew she was a wizard. There was a dwarf on her front porch! She went outside, and told the dwarf to go away. But in it's squeaky voice it said:

"We need your help. Someone is trying to take over our kingdom. Please help!"

Paige was trying to enjoy her weekend, but now she had to save a kingdom of dwarfs. "I can't today. Maybe another day."

"No no! We need help now!!" the dwarf pleaded.

"Fine. I'll be back in a sec." Paige felt she needed to leave her mom a note, to tell she was gone. It said:

Hi mom, I had to run to a friend's house to pick up something. I'll be home soon. --Paige

She hoped she wouldn't be too long. She then hurried to the dwarf in the front. They hurried to the kingdom, dwarf in the front, Paige in the rear. She hoped with all of her might that it would be quick and easy.

Then dwarf squealed, “We're almost there!"
